The Audiovisual
In the fourth chapter, The Audiovisual, Mitch Albom describes Morrie in his home as people start to become interested in him more and more. Albom describes Morrie’s basic lifestyle, from the being lifted in and out of bed to the difficulty of chewing, but Morrie continues. A fellow teacher notices this and is moved to write a lengthy article about Morrie, which makes its way to Ted Koppel from the “Nightline” show. Albom describes the arrival of the camera crew at Morrie’s house, Morrie’s rejection of makeup, and when Morrie interviews Koppel beforehand. Soon the cameras are set up in the living room, the lights are up, and Koppel in his suit and Morrie in his sweater. Albom then describes himself casually searching the channels, when he, “heard these words from the TV set -- ‘Who is Morrie Schwartz?’-- and went numb.” The chapter is finished with a flashback to the first day Mitch walked into Morrie’s class and introduced himself, and Morrie asking to call him by a nickname and hoping to be his friend.
